What Is an SR-22?
In Illinois, financial responsibility insurance (SR-22) is required for “problem drivers” to help monitor their insurance. The Secretary of State’s office is authorized to suspend a driver’s license upon cancellation or expiration of an SR-22.
Under Illinois law, individuals with the following may be required to obtain an SR-22:
Safety responsibility suspensions
Unsatisfied judgment suspensions
Mandatory insurance supervisions
Three or more convictions for mandatory insurance violations
How Do I Get an SR-22?
To get an SR-22, you need to contact an insurance company authorized by the state to write SR-22 policies. Hanway Insurance is authorized by the state of Illinois to write SR-22 policies, and our agents are ready to help you. Typically, an SR-22 certificate is issued in one of three forms, depending on whether you’re an owner, operator or owner-operator of a vehicle.
After a Hanway Insurance agent helps you select a policy and you have made a payment, our agency will submit the request for a certificate to the Illinois Secretary of State. It may take up to 30 days for processing, and you will receive a copy of the certificate from Hanway Insurance, as well as a letter from the Secretary of State’s office. You must hold this insurance for three years. If it expires or is canceled, Hanway Insurance must notify the state and your driving record will be suspended by the state until the insurance filing has been reinstated.
