What to do if you’re involved in an accident in Illinois

🛑 1. Immediate Steps After an Accident

If you’re in an accident — whether it’s your fault or not — follow these steps:

  1. Call the police — always file an official report.
  2. Exchange information with the other driver(s):
    • Full name and phone number
    • License plate number
    • Insurance company and policy number
    • Driver’s license number
  3. Take photos of all vehicles, the scene, and any visible damage.
  4. Contact your insurance carrier — the number is listed on your ID card.
    • Even if you’re not at fault, still notify your company. The other driver’s insurance may be inactive or not liable.
  5. Request the police report — it can usually be purchased online within 1–2 business days.

🚨 Note: On Illinois traffic reports, Unit 1 is typically listed as the at-fault party.

📞 2. How to File a Claim

Claims must be filed directly with your insurance company (the carrier), not the agency.
You can find their claims number on your insurance ID card.

Don’t know your carrier? Call or text Hanway Insurance at 708-874-6000 — we’ll help identify your company and guide you to the right contact.

⚠️ Important Reminder:
Hanway Insurance is your agency, not your insurance company. We’ll support you — but claims are handled by the carrier.

3. Top  Reasons Claims Get Denied by Non-Standard Insurance Companies in Illinois

To protect your claim and avoid denial, review your policy carefully and make sure these are always up to date:

🚗 Covered Vehicles:

  • Business use (such as Uber, Lyft, delivery services, or other commercial activity) is not covered unless your policy includes TNC coverage (available with carriers like Founders and First Chicago).Vehicles must be used only for personal purposes.
  • No coverage for rebuilt titles, converted vehicles, or custom/aftermarket equipment unless specifically added.

👤 Covered Drivers:

  • All household members age 15+ must be disclosed and listed.
  • The registered owner of the vehicle must be listed on the policy.
  • Drivers with undisclosed medical conditions affecting safe driving may be excluded.

⚠️ Misrepresentation or Fraud:

  • Failing to disclose claims, violations, or additional drivers can void your policy entirely.
  • Any material misrepresentation on your application or renewal can lead to claim denial or policy rescission.

🧰 Roadside Assistance:

  • This coverage is optional and must be explicitly requested. It is not automatically included with any policy.

🏠 Address Change:

  • You must notify the agency immediately in writing if your address changes or if the vehicle is garaged in a different location.
  • Failure to do so can lead to claim denial or full policy rescission.

✔️ Tip: Always review your declarations page. If something looks wrong or is missing — let us know before a claim happens.
